What Is ADA Web Compliance?

The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requires that people with disabilities have equal access to goods and services, including websites. Under the updated ADA Title II rules (published April 2024), state and local government websites must conform to WCAG 2.1 Level AA.

ADA Title II Compliance Deadlines

  • April 24, 2026 — Entities serving 50,000+ people
  • April 24, 2027 — Entities serving fewer than 50,000 people

ADA Title III and Private Businesses

While ADA Title II specifically targets government entities, courts have increasingly applied ADA Title III to private business websites. In 2024, over 4,000 web accessibility lawsuits were filed against private businesses. Many of these settled for amounts ranging from $5,000 to $100,000+.

Common ADA Compliance Issues

  • Images without alternative text descriptions
  • Poor color contrast making text unreadable
  • Forms without proper labels
  • Videos without captions or transcripts
  • Interactive elements not accessible via keyboard
  • Missing page titles and heading structure
  • PDF documents that are not accessible
